In 2003, Sherman and her staff team, with help from researchers at the
Urban Leadership Institute, surveyed over 450 Protestant Hispanic
pastors from around the nation to learn about their congregations'
community serving activities. The study found that Hispanic
churches are vibrantly active in their communities, offering
nearly 50 different varieties of social services. Click here to
read the survey report.
Our National
Resource Directory of Hispanic Compassion Ministries 2003 contains listings
for over 300 Hispanic compassion ministries identified through the survey. Each
listing contains a brief description of their services and contact information.
Hard copies of the Directory can be ordered from CFIC for $10 (click
here for
the bookstore or call us at 434-293-5656). The Directory is also fully searchable online by state and by social
service type. Click here to search the online Directory.
The Hispanic Congregations research project also produced eight “instructive
profiles” (case
studies) of church-based Hispanic community ministries offering such services
as transitional living for ex-cons/substance abusers; college preparatory and
mentoring ministry to at-risk teens; ESL classes for the working poor; and a
health clinic and innovative insurance system for the uninsured, among others.
To download these profiles, click the links below. The documents are available
in both English and Spanish. Hard copies of the profiles can be ordered through
the CFIC bookstore.
